After more than a few heated arguments about the merits of a particular book with friends I’ve had to place myself at a bit more of a remove from things.

Quite frankly, I didn’t understand a lot of what was going on in this book. Harding was our first African-American president before Barack Obama? Does Ishmael Deed really believe that Scott Joplin was institutionalized and given electro- shock treatments by enemies of black music? In other words, all human culture, like the human race itself, comes out of Africa: While his work has often sought to represent neglected African and African-American perspective Ishmael Scott Reed is an American poet, essayist, and novelist.

In Mummbo Jumbo, is an android a person? How soon do you expect me to read this? I know, this sounds so very much like every other work of conspiracy fiction ever published and I would have rolled my eyes so hard at some points that they would have dropped from my head and onto the table, if Reed’s style weren’t so whimsically refreshing. Makes no difference what I say. I had a bit of an easier time with this one than The Free-Lance Pallbearers. Hinckle’s pathetic struggle jumvo actually portrayed red some sympathy amid the satire—I got the sense that, racial polemics aside, Reed knows he has more in common with a modernist literary intellectual than with a Voodoo magician. Reed describes Von Vampton as having one blue eye, and wearing a black eyepatch over the other eye—typical of the extravagant symbolism that shows up again and again in this book, and a fitting way of depicting Van Vechten’s role as an intermediary between white and black culture.
