Perhaps one result of this degree of post-modern layering of experience has been to suggest a definition of art which is far less concrete that that which Art After Philosophy chases, and flexible enough to allow difference to become a strength. Art is the definition of art.
On the other hand, let us consider why art cannot be or has difficulty when it attempts to be a synthetic proposition.
The meaning is the use. Works of art are analytic propositions. Perhaps this can be answered by looking into the difference between our time and the centuries preceding us. Kosuth defines art as ideally being entirely separate from the world, but this proposition seems to flout the contemporary understanding which describes the nature of our perceptions of what that world might be, as fluctuating, as temporally and culturally specific.

And this questioning of the nature of art is a very important concept in understanding the function of art.
